This Design for Additive Manufacturing masterclass organised by Additive Industries as part of the Additive World initiative, aims to offer an overview of all aspects of Design for Additive Manufacturing: drivers, design rules, dedicated designs, material selection and results. If you are you involved in industrial design, engineering, manufacturing of parts or related fields, this Masterclass will allow you to get a pragmatic overview of opportunities, challenges, applications and tools related to Design for Additive Manufacturing and will inspire designers and engineers to use the freedom this technology has to offer. At the end of the day experiences can be exchanged during networking drinks.

This Additive World masterclass is an event organized during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. On October 25, 2018, experienced industrial experts, Institutes and designers will share their designs, applications, products and business cases with you during this Masterclass.

Opening by Additive Industries


Daan A.J. Kersten MSc, MBA In 2012 Daan founded, together with Jonas Wintermans, Additive Industries, a high tech company industrialising 3D printing for functional parts in various metals. The ambition of Additive Industries is to bring additive manufacturing and 3D printing from lab to fab and allow the high tech manufacturing industry to capitalise on the opportunities additive manufacturing has to offer in creating lighter, compact, integrated, more complex products & parts with better thermal performance/ characteristics. Daan has been at the helm of several companies, some of them from the start. His heart beats for the high tech manufacturing industry and open innovation in the supply chain. In the evening hours, Daan is a board member and initiator of NextOEM, an accelerator program for young high tech companies.

Topology Optimalization

Abstract: During the masterclass van Keulen will focus on topology optimization. The spectacular success and the fast development of topology optimization and additive manufacturing techniques are intrinsically related to each other. Topology optimization is a powerful and cost-effective rationale tool to create innovative concepts in engineering. While most of the organic designs from topology optimization are generally too complex for classic manufacturing techniques, the emergence of additive manufacturing technologies have finally made it possible to fabricate these high performance designs.


Professor Fred van Keulen Prof. Fred van Keulen received his M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering (Cum Laude, 1987) and his doctorate (Cum Laude 1993) both from the Delft University of Technology. In 1999 he was rewarded an “Antoni van Leeuwenhoek” chair. From 2005 to 2010 he was the first chairman of the new Department PME at TU Delft and was scientific director of the Delft Centre for Mechatronics and Microsystems. Present research activities focus on mechanics and optimization with typical applications such as micro/nano devices and the associated high performance tools and instruments. In his research manufacturing aspects play a key role. Prof Van Keulen is the chair of the Structural Optimization and Mechanics (SOM) research section within Delft University of Technology. SOM develops ways to enhance and automate the conventional design process using computational modelling and optimization techniques. These techniques allow designers to confidently predict the performance of a complex design.

Designing for Process and Material in Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Abstract: Both metal and polymer laser powder bed fusion are widely used as additive manufacturing techniques to produce high-quality, end-use components in many demanding applications. This presentation will cover the fundamentals about this process and the materials used, in order to utilise the full benefits of manufacturing parts using laser powder bed fusion.


Dr. Mark Beard is the Global Director for Process and Application Development at Additive Industries. With a background in material science, he has had a career in Additive Manufacturing, both in academia and industry, for over 12 years. Before joining Additive Industries, he was the Technical Director at one of the world leading service providers for AM parts, supplying parts to highly regulated industries such as medical and aerospace, as well as providing time and cost sensitive components in high-end industrial and consumer markets.

Abstract: During this masterclass Sander will introduce his concepts and idea’s and will tell you why everyone is a maker.



Sander Smit is a 3D technology entrepreneur and co-founder of 3D Concept Store MakerPoint. MakerPoint brings 3D technology to consumers and professionals. It is a bricks and clicks retail concept with an online shop and physical stores. In a MakerPoint store clients experience 3D-printers, 3D-printing materials, 3D-scanners, software and 3D printed products.

Design for Additive Manufacturing Masterclass

Abstract: Everything you need to know to start designing for Additive Manufacturing. During this masterclass we will cover the following topics; DfAM guidelines, support structures, lattices and topology optimization.


Robin Huizing works as an Additive Manufacturing Designer at Additive Industries, specialised in Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM). In this role he trains leading companies in demanding markets such as automotive, aerospace, medical and food industry. He is the owner of an independent design studio for 11+ years and experienced with SLM, SLS, MJP, DLP, SLA and FDM. In his previous job as a 3D Printing Engineer at Shapeways he prepared, 3d printed and post-processed 10.000+ parts.

Digital fabrication and Design for Additive Manufacturing

During this masterclass Miguel Fernandez-Vinente will focus on The Manufacturing Technology Center (MTC), the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing (NCAM) and the role of Design for AM team within this center. He will share interesting case studies related to aerospace components and a Paralympic sit-ski, focusing on different challenges from the design point of view and the founded solutions. He’ll finish with his vision on the future related to functionally graded materials and voxel-based modeling. 


Miguel Fernandez-Vincente Miguel Fernandez-Vincente is a Design for Additive Manufacturing Advanced Research Engineer within the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing at the MTC, with a background in product design and rapid prototyping in both academia and industry. His focuses are in exploiting the design freedoms of AM through novel design methods; support the design procedures development for novel AM processes and the design knowledge transfer to industry. He has published in academic journals, presented at international conferences and supervised MSc students. Miguel is PhD candidate looking into the development of a design toolkit for additive manufacture with extrusion-based systems and is member of ISO and ASTM standardization committees.

Case studies of topology optimalization

Abstract: It is challenging to develop highly optimized components for 3D metal printing. In addition to process knowledge and 3D modeling skills, simulation-driven design will become increasingly important. This presentation shares experiences with topology optimization concerning a case study of a monolithic four DoF alignment mechanism. After a brief introduction to metal printing the design process is explained step by step. Although topology optimization delivers an optimized result, in many cases refinements need to be done in order to improve manufacturability. This case study shows examples of how to use 'Freedom of design' for this purpose as well as increasing the functionality. At the conclusion, a preview is given of a recent study concerning the optimization of an opto-mechanical housing. These cases show that 3D metal printing has great potential to unleash new innovations in the high-tech industry.


Jeroen Jonkers is technical specialist at the NTS-Group with five years of experience in metal additive manufacturing. With a opto-mechanical background he is focused on developing high-end manufacturing applications for 3D metal printing. Jonkers is actively involved in AddFab, a shared facility and competence center for industrial metal printing in Eindhoven.
